Apple iTunes 8 Features

QuickTime 7.5.5 was the prep, Front Row 2.1.6 the side dish, but now the main event, iTunes 8 itself, is available from Apple for your downloading pleasure!

Apple Says:

iTunes 8 includes Genius, which makes playlists from songs in your library that go great together. Genius also includes Genius sidebar, which recommends music from the iTunes Store that you don’t already have.

With iTunes 8, browse your artists and albums visually with the new Grid view; download your favorite TV shows in HD quality from the iTunes Store; sync your media with iPod nano (4th generation), iPod classic (120GB), and iPod touch (2nd generation); and enjoy a stunning new music visualizer.

iTunes 8 and iTunes U are now accessible with VoiceOver on your Mac.

Updated: Now available via Software Update, or you can grab it from Apple.com right now!

iTunes Features :

* Genius Playlists — Play a song, click the Genius button, and iTunes creates a playlist of other songs from your library that go great together. Genius playlists help you discover songs in your library you never knew you had — and rediscover forgotten favorites.

* Genius Sidebar – While you reacquaint yourself with the music you already own, let Genius introduce you to new music you’ll love. As you select songs in your library, the Genius sidebar displays songs from the iTunes Store that go great with it. The Genius sidebar won’t recommend songs already in your library, and you can preview and buy recommended songs directly from the sidebar.

* Grid View — See your iTunes library in a new way. Select Albums in Grid View and iTunes 8 displays your entire music library using cover art. Select Artists, Genres, or Composers and iTunes automatically creates groups of albums based on your selection. Simply skim across a group to see the albums inside, and start playing an album with a single click. Movies, TV shows, podcasts, and audiobooks look great in Grid View, too.

* HD TV Shows — Purchase select episodes of your favorite TV shows in high definition for just $2.99. Or get the whole season in HD with a Season Pass. And when you buy HD, iTunes doubles your viewing pleasure: You also get an iPod-ready version with a file size and resolution that’s ideal for smaller screens.

* Enhanced Accessibility — iTunes 8 is now screen reader friendly on both Mac and PC. Manage your iTunes library using VoiceOver in Mac OS X Leopard or Window-Eyes for Windows XP and Windows Vista. Or use your screen reader to purchase or download content from the iTunes Store — including iTunes U.

* New Visualizer — Turn on the new Visualizer and lose yourself in a 3D-scape of spheres, ribbons, and lights that pulsate to the beat and tempo of the song you’re playing.

Apple Ipod Touch with Firmware 2.1 and games

Steve Jobs took to the the stage during today’s “Let’s Rock” event and made a number of announcements relevant to iPhone and iPod Gaming.

iPod touch

Announcement most relevant to our readers was the unveiling of the 2nd generation iPod touch. The new unit is thinner than the 1st generation unit and features a curved, stainless steel back shell, similar in shape to that of the iPhone (but much lower profile).

Features include:

* 2.1 firmware
* Built-in speaker and volume control rocker
* 36 hours battery for music, 6 hours for video
* “Genius” playlist
* Integrated Nike+iPod support

The new units maintain the storage capacities of the 1st generation units: 8GB for $229, 16GB for $299, and 32GB for $399.

Clearly Apple is positioning the iPod touch as a solid gaming device. During his presentation, Jobs called the iPod touch “the best portable device for playing games” and ran a new ad video that shows off several games and calls the device the “funnest iPod ever.” The addition of an integrated speaker and volume controls make the device much more suitable for mobile gaming, as well.

Soccer image from Engadget

Senior VP of Marketing, Phil Schiller, demoed three games at today’s event: EA’s Spore Origins, Real Soccer 2009, and EA’s Need for Speed: Undercover (of which all save Need for Speed are now avilable in the App Store.)

Firmware 2.1 / iTunes 8

Jobs also promised that we would see the iPhone 2.1 firmware this Friday. Changes in the firmware are said to include:

* Significantly better battery life
* Fewer call drops
* Bug fixes
* Faster backups to iTunes
* No App crashes

The issue of App crashing and general iPhone instability has been a huge issue causing a number of issues for App Store shoppers installing the latest games.

Meanwhile, iTunes 8 has also been released today. The changes found in it appear to be geared more towards it’s use as a music jukebox, but we hope that some iPhone related changes may have made its way into this new version.

Jobs also revealed that customers had downloaded over 100 million applications from the App Store in 60 days and that there are currently approximately 700 games available for download.

4G Ipod Nano Announced by Steve Jobs

At the “Let’s Rock” event in San Francisco, Apple and Steve Jobs revealed an updated line up of iPods along with several new announcements. Two of the iPods that were significantly updated are iPod Nano and iPod Touch. To start with, the new 4G iPod Nano looks exactly like the rumored images which leaked few weeks back. Apple has gone back to the tall and thin form factor, dumping its 3G fat and short look. It has an oval aluminum design, with a longer display. Guess what? Jobs claims that 4G iPod Nano is the “Thinnest iPod we’ve ever made”.

ipod nano

4G iPod Nano will be sold in what Apple calls as “nano-chromatic colors” (silver, gunmetal, purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, red and pink). They’ve stuffed in an accelerometer into the device, which lets it function just like iPod Touch. You can rotate the device for watching widescreen videos, photos or for the cover flow interface. The accelerometer can also be used to change between songs just by shaking the device. It can hold up to 24 hours of music, or 4 hours of video. The device is priced at $149 for 8GB and $199 for 16GB.

Coming to iPod Touch, Apple is trying to market iPod Touch not just as a music player, but also as a gaming platform. 2G iPod Touch features sleek rounded metal body with integrated volume controls and built-in speakers. Nike+ connectivity is also packed straight inside the new iPod Touch. 16GB iPod Touch is priced at $299, whereas the 32GB version will sell for $399.

New Add-Ons in Ipod Nano 4G:

Its built in accelerometer allows for both portrait and landscape view of photos, videos, and Coverflow.

Shake to Shuffle - A great new feature. To activate shuffle, just shake the ipod and you will be ready to listen to a shuffled iPod.

Height:3.6 inches (90.7 mm)
Width:1.5 inches (38.7 mm)
Depth:0.24 inch (6.2 mm)
Weight:1.3 ounces (36.8 grams)

A new Battery

Apple Announcements at Lets Rock Event

Three new products are taking center stage from Apple’s music announcement in San Francisco so far today: a new version of iTunes, and new iPod Nano, and a new iPod Touch. Plans have also been confirmed for a long-awaited OS fix for the iPhone, one that promises to repair the host of problems users have seen since the 3G phone’s debut.

ITunes 8

Steve Jobs’ first revelation was the new iTunes 8. The updated program will make songs more accessible with tiled browsing platform that lets you see each track’s album cover. It also introduces an option called “Genius,” a tool that groups similar songs together into playlists. iTunes 8 will also mark the return of NBC content to the platform.

The New Nano

Next, Jobs showed off the new iPod Nano, which — as expected — will be the thinnest model ever made by Apple. It boasts a newly curved screen, a new voice recording function, and an updated interface modeled after the iPhone and iPod Touch. The next-generation Nano can also be flipped onto its side for better video viewing. One of the coolest additions, though, is the “shake to shuffle” ability: You literally shake the thing to advance to the next track, courtesy of its built-in accelerometer.

The new Nanos will be available in eight colors. The 8GB version will be $149 and the 16GB version $199. Both should be available within the next week. Apple is also prepping a new line of headphones to go with the players. They’ll offer controls right on the cord. The headphones will sell for about $80 and will be available next month.

The New Touch

Third, the updated iPod Touch, which cuts back on size and scales up on power. The thinner model, now available, offers integrated volume controls and a built-in speaker. It also has the same Genius playlist option as the new Nano and is now being touted for audiobook usage as well. The Touch will have access to the App Store, with games such as Spore and Real Soccer 2009 being prepared for release. The touch will run $229 for the 8GB, $299 for the 16GB, and $399 for the 32GB model.
OS X 2.1

Apple also announced the release of OS X 2.1 for both the iPhone and iPod Touch. The update is said to fix the bulk of iPhone problems — dropped calls, reception issues, and app-related crashes. The 2.1 release will be available free to any users already on 2.0 and will cost $9.99 for anyone on an earlier version.

Apple iPod nano 4G spy photo leaked

With all the leaked iPod nano 4G information in the past few days it’s hard to discern what’s real and what’s fake. But now, Engadget has latched onto this photo, of which all indications point to this one being the real deal.

It looks very much like what we’ve been seeing lately and though the image quality is a little blurry and it’s hard to tell if this iPod-ish item is really an iPod or just a cheap knock off, it’s matching up with all the nano 4G info we’ve gotten our hands on so far.

Regardless, we’ll know for sure very soon at the Apple Let’s Rock event on Tuesday, September 9th at 10 a.m. PST.

iTrip Universal FM Transmitter Review by mobilemag

 iTrip Universal FM Transmitter Review by mobilemag

Not everyone is familiar with the Griffin Technology name, but when it comes to FM transmitters for the Apple iPod, one of the trade names that immediately comes to mind is iTrip. You can think of iTrip as the “Kleenex” or “Velcro” of the FM transmitter universe. We’ve seen more than our fair share of iTrip transmitters from Griffin, but many of these are incredibly iPod-centric. In an effort to be a little more inclusive of the rest of the portable media player market, Griffin Technology has introduced the iTrip Universal.

Instead of connecting via the standard iPod dock connector, the iTrip Universal simply makes use of a universal 3.5mm audio cable that will effectively work with just about any audio source (and not just iPods). If you’ve got something like a Sandisk Sansa, Microsoft Zune, or Creative Zen, the iTrip Universal from Griffin might be for you.

Key Features and Technical Specifications

According to the official product page, the Griffin iTrip Universal comes with a rather standard set of features. It won’t floor you, but it sounds like it would get the job done.

* Plug and play easy for any portable audio player

* Streams your music to any FM radio

* Self-powered by a built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery (180 mAh)

* Hours of play without needing to replace disposable batteries

* Quick set-up and easy frequency selection

* Backlit display is easy to read

* Frequency range: 88.1 MHz to 107.9 MHz

* Operating range: 10-30 feet

Unlike the iTrip Auto Smartscan that I reviewed a few months ago, the iTrip Universal does not come with the ability to scan for the best FM frequencies. It’s up to you to find the one with the least amount of interference.

First Impressions

iTrip Universal FM Transmitter Review by mobilemag

Some of the features on the iTrip Universal from Griffin are both a blessing and a curse. For starters, you are not bound to the 12V power jack in your automobile. This means that that the iTrip Universal can work anywhere that you are, whether it be in the car, on the street, or at the local convenience store. If you need some FM transmitting, it’ll surely come to the rescue. By the same accord, this also means that the power of the transmission isn’t quite as good. This appears to be true of all FM transmitters that don’t rely on an external power source.

It’s good to see that you can juice up that 180 mAh lithium-ion battery via a standard USB connection. In this way, you can charge your iTrip Universal at the same time that you charge your iPod. Unfortunately, there is no cap management system, so you might lose the USB cap. Also, there is no adapter for charging through a standard wall outlet, unless you invest in something like the Griffin PowerDuo Universal.

There are a few other things that I should note. You may notice that there is no power button on the iTrip Universal. That’s because this thing turns on automatically when it detects that your portable audio player is playing something. Again, another blessing and curse. Turning on doesn’t appear to be an issue, but you have to just sit and wait for the iTrip to turn itself off. I do appreciate the incredibly compact form factor of this device, though.

Configuration and User Interface

iTrip Universal FM Transmitter Review by mobilemagThe Griffin iTrip Universal is controlled through a total of three buttons, all of which are located underneath the relatively small backlit display. Oh, and when they say backlit, they really only mean two tiny lights that illuminate the corners. It’s not a “true” backlit in the sense that you may think.

The three buttons are +, -, and presets. You can probably figure out how those work. Setting and selecting presets, as well as alternating between stereo and mono modes, is done through some combination of these three buttons either being pressed or held. You’ll need the provided instruction manual to understand it all, but the basics are just as straightforward as you’d expect. No complaints there.

Audio and Signal Quality

Unfortunately, this FM transmitter does not live up to the reputation that the iTrip moniker deserves. Audio quality was quite poor, regardless of which frequency I selected on the FM dial. I tried placing the transmitter (and my iPod) in a variety of locations around the dash, but I could never get a super solid signal. There was always a slight “fuzz” to the audio being picked up. Further still, the actual quality of the sound wasn’t that great, coming off sounding “muffled”. This was true of all types of music, whether it be the rap stylings of Nas, the 90s pop rock of Oasis, or soothing ballads of Coldplay.

As far as I can tell, there are two possible suspects for this relatively poor audio quality. First, the iTrip Universal does not have an antenna that is powerful enough. This is because it’s not being plugged into the cigarette jack and the internal battery isn’t exactly adequate. Second, the audio is being fed through a 3.5mm cable rather than the iPod dock connector. This usually reduces audio quality as well.

Conclusion

At $39.99, the Griffin iTrip Universal isn’t exactly an inexpensive endeavor. I appreciate the relative universality of this particular FM transmitter, because it frees you from having to choose one specific MP3 player (iPod) and it frees you from the need for an external power source (like the 12V jack in your car). Unfortunately, this universality comes at a rather severe price.

It may have a nice form factor and a straightforward user interface, but the poor audio and signal quality are two very difficult things to overlook. That’s the whole reason why you’d need an FM transmitter in the first place and if it’s pumping out crappy audio (even crappier than “real” FM radio stations), then what’s the point?
