Nokia is working on linux platform for new mobile phones

After launching the latest multimedia phone, N97, Nokia has started to seek for new technology implementation. According to Ukko Lappalainen, Vice President at Nokia’s market unit, Linux will become a serious alternative for Nokia’s high-end phones.

Linux based platform has gained more popularity, thanks to the development of Google’s Android. But, Nokia is not interested at all to Android. As it has its own version of Linux, called maemo, to serve its Internet tablet, most likely Nokia will boost maemo development to meet Finn company’s requirement of cellphone OS.

When will that happen? Let’s wait the confirmation, probably next year.

Sanyo’s PLC-XP200L projector gets reviewed

You’re probably wondering whether adding in a fourth panel to an LCD projector is really worthwhile. Actually, you’re probably willing to bet your bottom dollar that it’s a gimmick. Sound & Vision took the moment to actually critique Sanyo’s latest with an open intellect, and believe it or not, it found the all new QuaDrive technology to be everything it was hyped up to be. To be fair, the PLC-XP200L isn’t tailor-made for the domestic theater; the lowly 1,024 x 768 resolution and 4:3 aspect ratio sound downright appalling. However, reviewers focused more on the actual technology / image quality given that Sanyo already has a compact, quieter, 16:9 QuaDrive beamer slated for 2009. During a demonstration, critics found the new tech to be visibly better than 3LCD rivals, with the picture appearing “dramatically more vivid.” Should you rush out and buy the XP200L? Probably not. But you may just want to delay your impending PJ purchase until that HT version hits next year.

Apple Ipod Touch with Firmware 2.1 and games

Steve Jobs took to the the stage during today’s “Let’s Rock” event and made a number of announcements relevant to iPhone and iPod Gaming.

iPod touch

Announcement most relevant to our readers was the unveiling of the 2nd generation iPod touch. The new unit is thinner than the 1st generation unit and features a curved, stainless steel back shell, similar in shape to that of the iPhone (but much lower profile).

Features include:

* 2.1 firmware
* Built-in speaker and volume control rocker
* 36 hours battery for music, 6 hours for video
* “Genius” playlist
* Integrated Nike+iPod support

The new units maintain the storage capacities of the 1st generation units: 8GB for $229, 16GB for $299, and 32GB for $399.

Clearly Apple is positioning the iPod touch as a solid gaming device. During his presentation, Jobs called the iPod touch “the best portable device for playing games” and ran a new ad video that shows off several games and calls the device the “funnest iPod ever.” The addition of an integrated speaker and volume controls make the device much more suitable for mobile gaming, as well.

Soccer image from Engadget

Senior VP of Marketing, Phil Schiller, demoed three games at today’s event: EA’s Spore Origins, Real Soccer 2009, and EA’s Need for Speed: Undercover (of which all save Need for Speed are now avilable in the App Store.)

Firmware 2.1 / iTunes 8

Jobs also promised that we would see the iPhone 2.1 firmware this Friday. Changes in the firmware are said to include:

* Significantly better battery life
* Fewer call drops
* Bug fixes
* Faster backups to iTunes
* No App crashes

The issue of App crashing and general iPhone instability has been a huge issue causing a number of issues for App Store shoppers installing the latest games.

Meanwhile, iTunes 8 has also been released today. The changes found in it appear to be geared more towards it’s use as a music jukebox, but we hope that some iPhone related changes may have made its way into this new version.

Jobs also revealed that customers had downloaded over 100 million applications from the App Store in 60 days and that there are currently approximately 700 games available for download.

4G Ipod Nano Announced by Steve Jobs

At the “Let’s Rock” event in San Francisco, Apple and Steve Jobs revealed an updated line up of iPods along with several new announcements. Two of the iPods that were significantly updated are iPod Nano and iPod Touch. To start with, the new 4G iPod Nano looks exactly like the rumored images which leaked few weeks back. Apple has gone back to the tall and thin form factor, dumping its 3G fat and short look. It has an oval aluminum design, with a longer display. Guess what? Jobs claims that 4G iPod Nano is the “Thinnest iPod we’ve ever made”.

ipod nano

4G iPod Nano will be sold in what Apple calls as “nano-chromatic colors” (silver, gunmetal, purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, red and pink). They’ve stuffed in an accelerometer into the device, which lets it function just like iPod Touch. You can rotate the device for watching widescreen videos, photos or for the cover flow interface. The accelerometer can also be used to change between songs just by shaking the device. It can hold up to 24 hours of music, or 4 hours of video. The device is priced at $149 for 8GB and $199 for 16GB.

Coming to iPod Touch, Apple is trying to market iPod Touch not just as a music player, but also as a gaming platform. 2G iPod Touch features sleek rounded metal body with integrated volume controls and built-in speakers. Nike+ connectivity is also packed straight inside the new iPod Touch. 16GB iPod Touch is priced at $299, whereas the 32GB version will sell for $399.

New Add-Ons in Ipod Nano 4G:

Its built in accelerometer allows for both portrait and landscape view of photos, videos, and Coverflow.

Apple Announcements at Lets Rock Event

Three new products are taking center stage from Apple’s music announcement in San Francisco so far today: a new version of iTunes, and new iPod Nano, and a new iPod Touch. Plans have also been confirmed for a long-awaited OS fix for the iPhone, one that promises to repair the host of problems users have seen since the 3G phone’s debut.

ITunes 8

Steve Jobs’ first revelation was the new iTunes 8. The updated program will make songs more accessible with tiled browsing platform that lets you see each track’s album cover. It also introduces an option called “Genius,” a tool that groups similar songs together into playlists. iTunes 8 will also mark the return of NBC content to the platform.

The New Nano

Next, Jobs showed off the new iPod Nano, which — as expected — will be the thinnest model ever made by Apple. It boasts a newly curved screen, a new voice recording function, and an updated interface modeled after the iPhone and iPod Touch. The next-generation Nano can also be flipped onto its side for better video viewing. One of the coolest additions, though, is the “shake to shuffle” ability: You literally shake the thing to advance to the next track, courtesy of its built-in accelerometer.

The new Nanos will be available in eight colors. The 8GB version will be $149 and the 16GB version $199. Both should be available within the next week. Apple is also prepping a new line of headphones to go with the players. They’ll offer controls right on the cord. The headphones will sell for about $80 and will be available next month.

The New Touch

Third, the updated iPod Touch, which cuts back on size and scales up on power. The thinner model, now available, offers integrated volume controls and a built-in speaker. It also has the same Genius playlist option as the new Nano and is now being touted for audiobook usage as well. The Touch will have access to the App Store, with games such as Spore and Real Soccer 2009 being prepared for release. The touch will run $229 for the 8GB, $299 for the 16GB, and $399 for the 32GB model.
OS X 2.1

Apple also announced the release of OS X 2.1 for both the iPhone and iPod Touch. The update is said to fix the bulk of iPhone problems — dropped calls, reception issues, and app-related crashes. The 2.1 release will be available free to any users already on 2.0 and will cost $9.99 for anyone on an earlier version.
